We all experience challenges and difficulties in life that can affect how we think, feel, or behave. Sometimes we can find ourselves experiencing emotions or thoughts that don’t seem to stem from our past or present circumstances. There may be ways we go about our life – certain habits or tendencies –that we would prefer not to have, or that cause problems in their own right.

In any of these cases, we can hopefully find ways to deal with them – perhaps with the help of a friend, partner, or someone else. Sometimes, though, our own coping strategies or help from others isn’t enough. It might be that the problem is too big for us to handle, or that our own efforts aren’t making enough of a difference.

It is probably then that you might want to consider seeing someone who has the professional training, skills, and experience to help. Psychologists (link to Psych service oage) are specially trained to help people with problems they are experiencing with emotions, thoughts, or behaviour. Just as medical professionals can help us with health problems beyond our scope, psychologists can do the same.

Another reason to consider seeing a psychologist is that they can see us more objectively than people close to us, and provide professional help in a non-judgemental and confidential manner. Friends or others may also sometimes offer (well-meaning) advice, guidance, or other ideas that aren’t actually soundly-based, accurate, or helpful.

Ultimately, the decision whether or not to see a psychologist is naturally yours to make. If you do decide to see someone, it is important to see if there is a good match between what you want help with, and their areas of experience. You might want to make an initial appointment to simply ‘see how it goes’, and decide after that whether or not to continue.
