Frozen shoulder, also known as adhesive capsulitis, is a condition characterized by stiffness and pain in the shoulder joint. It involves the thickening and tightening of the shoulder capsule, which is the connective tissue surrounding the joint (like the fence around your property).
In frozen shoulder, the shoulder capsule becomes inflamed and thickened, leading to the formation of scar tissue. This restricts the movement of the shoulder and causes pain. The condition typically progresses through three stages, that may occur in overlapping phases. The freezing stage involves increasing pain and decreasing range of motion, lasting from six weeks to nine months. The frozen stage may see a reduction in pain, but stiffness remains, lasting from four to six months. The thawing stage involves a gradual improvement in shoulder movement, which can take from six months to two years.
The primary symptoms of frozen shoulder are pain and stiffness in the shoulder joint. The pain is usually a dull, aching pain that can worsen at night. Stiffness leads to a limited range of motion in all directions. During the freezing stage, pain increases and motion decreases. In the frozen stage, pain may lessen, but stiffness persists. The thawing stage is marked by a gradual improvement in movement.
