Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS) is a condition caused by pressure on the median nerve, which runs through a bony structure called the ‘carpal tunnel’ in the wrist. The carpal tunnel is a narrow passageway formed by bones and ligaments. When this tunnel becomes narrowed or irritated, it can compress the median nerve, leading to neurological symptoms in the hand and wrist.
Common symptoms of CTS include:
· Numbness, tingling, or "pins and needles" in the thumb, index, and middle fingers.
· Pain or discomfort in the wrist, hand, or forearm, often worse at night.
· Weakness in the hand, causing difficulty gripping or holding objects.
· A sensation of swelling in the fingers, even if no visible swelling is present.
Physiotherapists play an essential role in managing CTS through both conservative treatments and preventative strategies. Key interventions include:
1. Wrist Splinting: Wearing a splint, particularly at night, to keep the wrist in a neutral position and reduce pressure on the median nerve.
2. Stretching and Strengthening Exercises: Specific exercises to improve wrist mobility, reduce tension, and strengthen muscles that support the wrist.
3. Postural and Ergonomic Advice: Modifying daily activities and workstation ergonomics to reduce repetitive strain on the wrist, and thus less strain on the carpal tunnel itself.
4. Manual Therapy: Techniques to reduce soft tissue tension and improve nerve mobility can be incredibly affect, especially in cases where the nerve is irritable before it goes through the tunnel. Our OHL Physio team will do thorough physical testing to understand if this is happening in your case.
5. Education and Lifestyle Modifications: We can work with you to implement practical strategies to prevent exacerbating factors, such as repetitive movements.
With appropriate physiotherapy, many individuals can manage symptoms effectively and avoid the need for surgery, however we will also be open with you if your CTS case is one that warrants a surgical review.
